Today's Lesson Theme: Historic Trails of Chiayi City
In today’s English class, Teacher Michael took everyone on a journey through the historic trails of Chiayi! Students got to know three local trails:
Yunxiao Trail, known for the traditional craft of puo-siang-kha (香腳 carving),
Nantian Trail, home to the remains of a glutinous rice bridge,
and Chongyang Trail, which features mural art combined with traditional handicrafts.
The lesson kicked off with a short video introducing Chiayi’s history and the unique features of the three trails. Then, students used sentence patterns provided by the teacher to write down their own observations, such as:
📝 "We saw a lot of buildings."
📝 "I saw painted walls."
They uploaded their sentences to a shared iPad platform, which not only gave them writing practice but also let them see each other’s thoughts in real time—kind of like an English version of a digital comment wall. It was really fun!
As for vocabulary, the teacher introduced key words like trail, path, feature, painted, and mural. Along with pictures, he also asked thought-provoking questions like:
🤔 “Are trail and path the same?”
🤔 “What’s the difference between a mural and a painted wall?”
To wrap up, the class watched a video about the puo-siang-kha carving tradition, giving students a deeper appreciation for this unique local craft from Chiayi. By combining language learning with cultural exploration, the class helped students not only improve their English but also connect more closely with their hometown.
